Racing for a Cause: Telluride One to One Cardboard Sled Derby

Every winter, locals and visitors in Telluride look forward to a uniquely thrilling and heartwarming event — racing for a cause in the Telluride One to One Cardboard Sled Derby. It’s more than just a downhill race; it’s a celebration of creativity, community, and compassion, all set against the stunning backdrop of the San Juan Mountains.

What is the Cardboard Sled Derby?

The Cardboard Sled Derby is an annual fundraiser organized by One to One Mentoring.  One to One is a Telluride-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth through mentorship. The event challenges participants to design and build homemade sleds using only cardboard, duct tape, string, and paint — no metal, wood, or plastic allowed. Then, those brave (and possibly slightly crazy) enough to ride them zoom down Telluride Ski Resort’s Nastar Race Hill.

It’s fun, it’s wild, and it’s all for a good cause.

Creativity on Display

One of the biggest draws of the event is the outrageous design competition. Each team chooses its own theme. The sleds range from impressively aerodynamic rockets to whimsical pirate ships, dragons, tacos, and even entire castles. It’s part sled race, part costume contest, and part community art project.

Awards are given not just for speed, but also for Best Design, Best Crash, and Most Team Spirit. It’s the kind of event where style matters just as much as substance. A well-themed wipeout might win you just as many cheers as a podium finish.

Supporting Local Youth

While the derby is a blast for spectators and participants alike, it also serves a deeper purpose. One to One Mentoring supports young people across San Miguel County by providing them with consistent, caring adult mentors. The organization helps build relationships that foster confidence, resilience, and success both in and out of school.

All proceeds from the Cardboard Sled Derby go directly toward funding these essential programs. By entering a team, donating, or just cheering from the sidelines, community members are directly contributing to the empowerment of local youth.

Why You Should Go to the One to One Cardboard Sled Derby

Whether you’re a long-time local or just visiting Telluride for ski season, the Cardboard Sled Derby is an event you don’t want to miss. It’s a perfect combination of winter fun, community spirit, and creative chaos. Bring the whole family, grab some hot cocoa, and enjoy a truly one-of-a-kind spectacle.

Plus, where else are you going to see a cardboard spaceship faceplant into a snowbank in the name of charity?
