Fly Fishing

Telluride boasts some of the best trout streams in the Rocky Mountains, as well as a variety of alpine creeks, lakes, and ponds, making it a top destination for fishing enthusiasts. For the ultimate fishing experience, it is recommended to hire a local guide who knows the waterways and surrounding terrain. With a knowledgeable outfitter, you can opt for a float fishing trip or access private waters.

When fishing in Telluride, visitors should be aware of fishing etiquette and regulations. In Colorado, a fishing license is mandatory and can be obtained from most sporting goods shops. Most lakes and rivers in the region have a possession limit of zero to four fish depending on the species. Visitors should protect river corridors by avoiding trampling plants and causing erosion of banks that affect fish habitat. It’s also important to avoid trespassing on private property, and always ask for permission from the landowner.

Visitors are advised to learn about local regulations, including bait restrictions and catch-and-release sections of the river. To catch and release, anglers should use barbless flies or flatten the barbs on their hooks. It is recommended to handle fish with wet hands and avoid sunscreen and insect repellent, which can damage the trout’s protective coating.
